Shovavim Rectification – Hameir Laarets

What is Shovavim?

"Shovavim" (or "the Days of Shovavim") refers to an annual six-week period during which we read the first six Torah portions of Sefer Shemot: Shemot, Va’era, Bo, Beshalach, Yitro, and Mishpatim. The tradition is that this period is auspicious for repentance and spiritual rectification.

Additionally, the term "Shovavim" refers to the verse (Yirmiyahu 3:22): "Return, wayward ('Shovavim') children, and I will heal your waywardness." This reflects Hashem’s call to His rebellious children to return to Him, promising to "heal" their waywardness and forgive their transgressions.

What is "Shovavim Tat"?

In a leap year, which includes two Adar months, this period is extended by two additional weeks, beginning in the first Adar month. It is then referred to as "Shovavim Tat," including the next two Torah portions: Terumah and Tetzaveh.

Furthermore, in some earlier sources, the custom is originally mentioned only in connection with a leap year. However, later Kabbalistic and halachic works state that the custom is practiced every year.

The Chida explained (in Birkei Yosef) that while the custom is observed every year, its spiritual potency is greater and more effective in a leap year.

Why is the Shovavim Rectification more auspicious in a leap year?

Various explanations are offered regarding the connection between the Shovavim Rectification and a leap year.

The author of the Levush wrote that it is known that in a leap year, there is a concern for the safety of pregnant women, as there is a fear of miscarriage, G-d forbid. Therefore, people fast to invoke mercy on their behalf.

He adds that this is one of the reasons the Shovavim fasts were instituted to begin during the week of Parashat Shemot, where we read the verse, "And the children of Israel were fruitful and increased abundantly," symbolizing blessings for successful pregnancy and birth.

The Shelah HaKadosh offered an additional reason based on Kabbalah: As is known, a leap year balances the gap between the solar and lunar years.

This gap stems from the "diminishing of the moon," which occurred on the fourth day of Creation as a punishment for the "sin of the moon."

Therefore, in a leap year, which symbolizes that sin, there are various spiritual accusations, making it even more important to seek atonement and repentance.

What are the dates of the Shovavim period?

The period begins at the start of the week of Parashat Shemot and lasts for six weeks until Shabbat Parashat Mishpatim (in a leap year, eight weeks until Shabbat Parashat Tetzaveh).

The exact date varies from year to year.

However, this period typically begins around mid-Tevet (about two weeks after Chanukah) and ends about six weeks later, around the end of Shevat.

(In a leap year, the period lasts about two months, ending around the middle of Adar I.)

Why specifically during this period?

The weekly Torah portions read during this period (Parashat Shemot to Parashat Mishpatim) describe the stages of the story from the beginning of the enslavement of Bnei Yisrael in Egypt to their Exodus and the giving of the Torah.

According to Kabbalah, the enslavement in Egypt was intended to redeem the spiritual sparks of holiness that had fallen into the impure "husks" (kelipot).

Therefore, this period is particularly suited to rectifying the blemishes of the covenant, also known as "Tikkun Yesod."

Additionally, Chassidic thought teaches that the story of Bnei Yisrael's Exodus from Egypt to their arrival at Har Sinai, followed by the construction of the Mishkan, symbolizes their elevation from the lowest spiritual level to their supreme root. This parallels the ascent of the soul of every Jew who repents and rectifies his soul. Thus, the period in which these portions are read is especially suited for repentance and rectification.

What is the source of the custom of Shovavim?

Its source is very ancient, first briefly mentioned in the book of customs by Maharash of Neustadt (who passed away around 1414).

More detailed mention is found in the book Leket Yosher by Rabbi Yosef Yoizel Ostreicher (lived circa 1420–1488). It notes that the communities in Austria would fast during these weeks of a leap year every Thursday. If fasting was prohibited on a Thursday, they would advance it to Monday.

He testifies that his teacher, Rabbi Yisrael Isserlein (1390–1460), the author of Terumat HaDeshen, also followed this practice. This custom is also mentioned in the works of Mateh MosheLevushShelah, and Magen Avraham.

In the writings of the Arizal (Sha’ar Ruach HaKodesh, Tikkun 27), as well as in the books of later great Kabbalists such as the Chida, the custom is elaborated upon extensively with detailed mystical meanings, intentions, and unique spiritual unifications for these days according to the teachings of Kabbalah. This was also brought by Rabbeinu the Ben Ish Chai in his works.

What is the special spiritual advantage of this period?

This period is particularly auspicious for specific acts of repentance, especially for rectifying the covenant (Tikkun HaBrit) and repairing spiritual blemishes related to the "foundation" (Yesod).

It is also a time for engaging in general repentance (with joy) and increasing one’s Torah study and mitzvah observance.

As our teacher, Rabbi Yoram Michael Abargel zt”l, wrote (Imrei Noam Mo’adim, 233): “During the days of Shovavim, special assistance is granted from Heaven to anyone who desires to sanctify themselves so they may succeed in doing so.”

What should one do during the days of Shovavim?

The most important and fundamental step for someone seeking to rectify their soul is actively engaging in repentance. This means completely abandoning and ceasing one’s sins and improper actions, accepting the yoke of Heaven’s sovereignty, like a son returning to his father.

They should also distance themselves from things that might lead them to sin, ensuring they do not fall again. From now on, they should take upon themselves additional strengthening in Torah and mitzvot with joy. All of this should be done pleasantly and peacefully with their household members and others around them.

Is it enough to do repentance during the days of Shovavim, or is it necessary to perform a special rectification and give charity?

Repentance is indeed the main aspect, but it is not sufficient to complete the atonement process. The rectification of Shovavim is intended to finalize the atonement and continue the act of repentance itself.

The rectifications are not meant to replace repentance but to cleanse the spiritual blemishes and impurities caused by sin.

As explained in the writings of the Arizal (based on Zohar, Parashat Vayechi, 219b), even after a person repents and is forgiven, the spiritual blemish is not entirely erased and must be purified and rectified.

In Chassidut (Iggeret HaTeshuva), it is explained that the fasting associated with repentance serves as a substitute for the concept of "suffering," which is meant to complete a person’s purification from their sins.

It also substitutes for offering sacrifices, which is essentially renewed closeness and satisfaction with Hashem.

As stated in the Gemara (Zevachim 7a), offering a sacrifice is likened to a servant giving a gift to the king to regain favor and affection after being forgiven for their sin.

The source of this is found in the story from the Gemara (Berachot 17a), where the Amora Rav Sheshet, during his fast, would say after his prayer: “Master of the Universe, it is revealed before You that when the Beit HaMikdash was standing, a person would sin and bring a sacrifice, and only its fat and blood would be offered, and they would achieve atonement. Now I have sat in fasting, and my fat and blood have been diminished. May it be Your will that the fat and blood I have diminished be considered as if I had offered them before You on the altar, and may You find favor in me.”

This version is brought in the Tur and Shulchan Aruch to be recited during a fast.

Is it necessary to fast during the days of Shovavim?

The ancient and sacred custom is to observe a series of repentance fasts during these days.

In earlier generations, it was encouraged and customary to increase repentance fasts in general. During these weeks, this was practiced in various ways: Some fasted for forty consecutive days, others fasted on Mondays and Thursdays, and some fasted only on Thursdays. Some still follow these practices today.

However, the great sages of Israel and halachic authorities of recent generations have already ruled that in our times, one should not overly engage in repentance fasts. The world has grown weaker, and fasting disrupts and harms one’s ability to focus on Torah and prayer.

Therefore, the benefits of fasting may be outweighed by its disadvantages, as fasting can lead to spiritual weakness. This is especially true for someone whose primary focus is Torah study, as the weakness caused by fasting would prevent them from engaging in it properly.

Therefore, instead of fasting, one should increase in giving charity, as detailed below.
